Great pattern attributed to Henri Bresson in Jean-Paul Pequegnot’s book ‘French Fishing Flies’.
Hook: size 12-18
Body: yellow silk
Hackle: hen mallard breast feather tied back and help back by the finishing knot.
The story of the fly is that Mr. Bresson was fishing and and ran into a gypsy who shared with him that in the months of May and June a wild female mallard breast feather had great power. With that knowledge Mr. Bresson went to try and tie some flies. All of them were ugly and he was not pleases but he put them in his box and did not fish them. Finally after a particularly difficult day he decided to give them a try. Of course they had the power and caught many fish. The Peute or "ugly" fly spread. Peute is Lorrain dialect for "ugly". I happen to think it is an elegant beautiful fly and I am sure the long soft fibers of the hackle are very life like in the water.
