Klinkhammer flies are Parachute flies that Hans van Klinken developed in the 80's where he bent the hook down to force part of the hook down in the water and more visible to the fish, also to look more like a caddis or mayfly emerging from its shuck. These shucks generally will hang down deeper into the water when the bug is trying to emerge. Originally tied much thinner than I did in this video, I generally tie them thicker because caddis tend to have fairly thick shucks in comparison to mayflies. The rest of the fly is tied similar to the original. Different shades of dubbing, hackle, and colors of the post material are common variations. I do believe rabbit fur, or other natural fur dubbing is most common, but I imagine you could use any dubbing you feel like. Some people will rib the body, others do not. You could use a brighter color for the post in order to see it better when making longer casts. All that is up to you. What generally is not changed is the peacock hurl for the thorax. Although im sure you could change that as well and have a fairly good fly that catches fish, however im not sure at that point you could call it a Klinkhammer. For the hackle, many will use dun, brown, ginger, grizzly like I used, or even black I've seen. Heck really any color hackle will do. I would say maybe try to keep it close to the wing color of whatever bug your trying to mimic though. But in some circumstances even using something as crazy as bright pink or chartreuse could work I imagine. So again, get creative. But know, the common fly thought of as a klinkhammer is a tan body, natural hackle, and peacock thorax.
