Clouser Minnow

No comments yet

Here we will be tying an American classic Minnow called the Clouser Minnow. The fly is a great option for both stream and lake fishing. The original Clouser Deep Minnow evolved from traditional bucktail streamers and was created in 1987 by Bob Clouser, a Pennsylvania fly shop owner and guide. The original patterns were intended for smallmouth bass on the Susquehanna River. The name Clouser Deep Minnow was coined by Lefty Kreh, a noted Fly Fishing writer in a 1989 article in Fly Fisherman. Today, the Clouser Deep Minnow is widely used for many species of both fresh and saltwater game fish. Lefty Kreh claims to have caught over 87 species of game fish on Clouser Deep Minnow! Lefty said "I believe that this pattern is the most important and effective underwater fly developed in the past 20 years". The Clouser Deep Minnow is an imitation of a baitfish, although there are many variations intended to imitate very specific baitfish in different fresh and saltwater situations. You can actually play around with the colours but white and olive or white and chartreuse seem to be the most popular colours. In Iceland we do have a fly called Köttur, I don't know is the Köttur was under an influence from the Clouser Minnow when it was devised at the time. They look familiar and the Köttur fly is a great pattern too just like the Clouser Minnow. And speaking of genius in fly fishing, a man from the USA suggested this fly for the channel and here it is finally at last! The fly catches all sort of predatory fish and can be tied in multiple colours and sizes. It's simple to tie and the Clouser Minnow deserves a place in your fly box!

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
