Caviar

No comments yet

In this video we'll be tying the fly Caviar by mrs. Helga Gísladóttir. The Caviar was devised here in Iceland just last year by Helga but Helga is enthusiastic fly tier and fly fisher. The fly is imitating fish roes obviously and therefor called Caviar by the maker of it. The reason Helga went for this pattern is because back in the days here in Iceland (and probably other countries), bait like fish roes was usually very good to have since it often caught you a fish. In some waters here now, it's prohibited to use roes as a bait. I have to admit that this pattern is something that I find very interesting design. It's simple and it has already give good results both in rivers here in Iceland and also some of the highland lakes. Tying the Caviar can be a little tricky some times but it all depends on how you line up the pearls. That's the most annoying work making this pattern. You can either thread the glass pearls on a monofilament (10 lbs.), or just medium size wire. Both will work. It's a fun challenge to tie this fly and I want to use the opportunity and give special thanks to Helga for the advises,

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
